A 2,000-acre ranch does not give up its secrets easily. Cedar breaks hide old fence lines. Draws and low spots flood without warning. Nobody has walked the back forty since the last drought. That is the reality for most large landowners in Texas, and it is exactly the kind of problem LiDAR was built to solve.

LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. A plane or drone fires thousands of laser pulses at the ground every second. Those pulses bounce back and create a precise, three-dimensional map of the land below. For ranch owners across the Hill Country, the Panhandle, the Piney Woods, and the South Texas brush country, that map answers questions a ground crew could spend weeks chasing.

Seeing Through Cedar Brush and Dense Canopy Where Ground Crews Can’t

Cedar and mesquite cover a lot of Texas ground. Walking through it is slow. Seeing the actual terrain underneath it is nearly impossible on foot.

LiDAR gets around this. The laser pulses find small gaps in the canopy and reach the bare earth. The system then filters out the brush and leaves a clean model of the ground surface.

Large ranches often have a dozen or more pastures, each divided by fencing that has been patched, moved, and rebuilt for decades. Walking every fence line to confirm its location takes days.

A single LiDAR flight can capture miles of fencing, gates, and cross-pasture divisions in one pass. The elevation data picks up on ridgelines and fence posts, giving surveyors a starting point for confirming exact locations on the ground.

This is not a replacement for a boundary survey. It is a fast way to see how existing pasture divisions line up with recorded property lines before a survey crew ever steps out of the truck.

Supporting Wildlife Management Valuation and Ag-Exemption Documentation

Landowners who manage their acreage for wildlife or agriculture can qualify for a special property tax valuation. That valuation depends on documented habitat conditions. 

LiDAR data adds useful detail to that documentation:

  • Vegetation density across pastures and habitat zones.
  • Changes in tree cover over time, when flights are repeated.
  • Terrain features tied to water sources, cover, and food plots.

A wildlife management plan still has to come from a qualified biologist or the landowner’s own records. LiDAR data simply gives that plan stronger, measurable backup.

Locating Stock Tanks, Windmills, Wells, and Drainage Across Remote Acreage

Water infrastructure on a big ranch tends to be spread out. A stock tank in one corner. A windmill three miles away. A well that has not been checked since last spring.

LiDAR elevation models show where water naturally collects and drains across the whole property. That helps ranch managers:

  • Confirm the exact location and elevation of tanks, wells, and windmills.
  • Spot low areas prone to erosion or standing water after heavy rain.
  • Plan new water infrastructure based on real drainage patterns, not guesswork.

For acreage too remote or rough to check on a regular basis, this turns a multi-day inspection into a single data review.

Planning Ranch Roads, Cattle Guards, and Access Points Over Rough Terrain

Interior ranch roads take a beating from weather and heavy equipment. A road built without accounting for grade or drainage often washes out within a year or two.

LiDAR gives ranch owners and contractors the elevation detail needed to plan routes that hold up:

  • Grade changes along a proposed road path.
  • Natural low-water crossing points instead of forced ones.
  • Locations where a cattle guard or culvert will actually handle runoff.

Planning around this data upfront costs less than repairing a washed-out road every spring.
